I go to google and do a search for info I want. Google comes back with several legitimate links to several legitimate webpages which contain the requested info.

Any link I click on takes me to a bogus search engine, or to another page which is selling something. It is a different page each time, and there is usually one popup which accompanies it.

I know that the links google comes back with are not links to the pages that are opening up, because when I right click and select 'copy shortcut', then paste url into browser, it will take me to the real page.

I went to internet tools/internet options/general tab, and the home page is set to what I set it to ages ago: http://www.google.com .

I emptied temp internet file, cleared history. Ran spybot. Ran hijackthis.exe and removed what I didn't like to see. I ran my updated AV program (AVAST). I did online scan and disinfect at bitdefender website.

Problem still exists. Anyone know what to do?

None of my programs work.?

Everytime I open programs like Trillian (for example) I get this error:

''The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.''

This includes Itunes, which will not open and wishes me to send an error report.

I have Avast which took care of the Trojans and worms, and I have uninstalled and installed all progs (aka, itunes, trillian, slsk, etc.)

As for now I can go on the internet ''Just fine'' but as far as playing music, or burning/importing mp3/4's... and getting into trillian for chatter, no can do...

I've tried the command promt ''chkdsk /f'', etc...and none of it works...

I've got a virus - help!?

I have no idea how to get rid of it. Norton anti-virus isn't detecting it. I used Windows' ''Remove malicious hardware'', it scanned my entire computer (took 5 hours) and came up with nothing. I've tried installing Avast but it keeps closing it down before I can even get anywhere with it. So far I've cleaned off about three of four folders that were obviously downloaded with the virus. This stupid virus won't allow me to open up the help section on my computer and it's slowing everything down considerably. There's warnings in my system tray that aren't authentic Window warnings as they lead to anti virus sites with ridiculous pop ups and the grammar is horrible ex. ''You computer is infected!!''

and found a lot of trojans (which are deleted now) after running an avast antivirus scan. so, i had another xp installed in my f drive. so i have 2 xps in my computer, and i prefer to use the newer one in f drive. however, i'm unable to play sounds in the xp in f drive. when i go through the settings; it says it does not detect any audio hardware?!

but when i use the older xp in drive c, it has the same settings it used to have before, detecting my headphones and i can hear music and play sounds in it.

I have been using AVG anti-virus for a couple of years. It has all the features of the expensive and recurring billing anti-virus commercial versions. It has found and protected me several times from some nasty virii as I do a lot of stuff in newsgroups (which are quite hazardous at times). I also recommend and install it on all of my customers home computers and no one has ever complained about it.

I also use the microsoft Defender for my anti-spyware and it works great with the free version as well.

I have had no issues using the built-in firewall for windows networking and my routers firewall service is good. I am using a linksys router, which I recommend.

Let me just tell you, if you put together an end-user who knows nothing about security and the threats that are out there and put that against a person who really knows how to ''hack'', they will find a way eventually. They always do. This is why we are seeing some of the major telecomm companies investing a lot of money into the frightening concept of a complete wipe and redesign of the internet from the ground up. (well, they also probably hope to be able to charge access fees and hourly charges and per bandwidth fees, etc).

I have been using AVG free and SyGate 5.6 PFW for over 4 years without one infection.
I would say use AVG as a good antivirus,ZoneAlarm as the best and award wining firewall,and ad-aware or spybot search and destroy they are both free and do excellent job.

almost all anti virus and anti spyware software in their free version can only check and heal old virus definition. But newer or fresher virus, can be found but couldnt heal it..

Not all images showing on Internet Explorer...?

For some reason not all images are showing on this laptop I鈥檓 trying to sort out.

I even took off McAfee and replaced it with Avast, but the problem remains the same....

I'm out of ideas as I've tried most web found solutions...

AVG it is free, you don't have to resubscribe, and it works just as well as all other anti-virus. My husband runs a computer networking business and recommends it to all of his clients.
I have used several anti-virus software's in the past. I purchased Kaspersky and I had a virus and it did not pick up the virus. I put my computer in the repair shop and they told me that I had a virus and the update did not pick up that virus.

Was it outbreak alert? Because i got the same message a few days ago because my norton was basically going insane. If it was outbreak alert that means computers around the world are being affected by it, not yours yet. However if norton says they found a threat called trojan.peacomm on your system then you may have a slight problem.

I noticed my laptop used to use 200-300 MB of ram when idle, no programs running, now it's consistently over 500 MB all the time after fully starting up.

I have run McAffee and Windows Defender and Avast! and all report no problems. But this situation started about a week ago, and I am often now getting Windows virtual memory too low messages, and the speed of the computer is obviously slower.

I had McAffee alert me a week or so ago that there was malware virus detected, but that was deleted, I am pretty sure, since I personally clicked to delete it.

Let me know if anyone else is having problems like this or has found a solution. THANKS!

well you are looking in the right direction, what you need to do is right click on the taskbar and turn on taskmanager and look in the processes to show you where your ram is going if you have another pc you can contrast usage- 200+ is normal for windows files the rest will be applications that you can remove with msconfig. let us know where the rams going AFTER waiting 7-10 mins after you turn system on, as there is a lot of activity during that time.

another approach is to install PROCESS explorer thats an expanded version of taskmanager, it cleverly checks for digital signatures-, malware, virus`s are not digitally signed.

Computer is so slow! I cant open Windows live messenger because it just closes and crashes, so i have to use old windows messenger. Internet slows at first but then gets faster, when i logged off it said ''computer has been locked'' So i had to switched the system off and then on again. Firefox has flaws like any other browser does. Same for noscript. There's a reason why you get updates now and then for both. They are patching holes. So I would have Anti Spyware as a precaution. After all, these days it can't hurt and may help.

- it prevents me from viewing hidden files and folders (it always set the option back to ''do not show hidden files'' no matter how many times i alter it)

- double clicking disk drives will open in a new window, even if I change the settings.

I tried Avast, NOD32, SpyBot Search and Destroy buy none succeeded in detecting the virus causing this.

I earlier formatted my main partition and everthing was back to normal but I accessed my Back Up Partition (same hard disk)

You missing 1 step after you reformatted your main partition. The step you missing is to scan your Backup Partition fefore you access it. The virus still there. You need to clean that partition before you access it. Built the main partition with full protection, scan and clean your backup from virus before accessing it.

Seems that you need to reformat your main partition again but don't do that mistake again. Good Luck.

(That would be your only potential conflict.)

Edit: The person below me apparently doesn't understand that an *on-demand* antivirus (ClamWin) is not running in *real-time* and therefore will not conflict with your real time AV (Avast.)

You will only have conflicts when you are running two *real-time* antivirus, like Avast and Avira, or Avast and AVG, or Avira and AVG.

Calling all computer experts - virus info please!?

I have a virus, I think it is a downloader/redirector but am not sure what to do...

i have Norton, Avast!, AVG, Spybot, Spyware guard, spyware blaster and PeerGuardian and yet it's still got in!

Basically when i load firefox it's running v.slow and then redirecting me to cpcstl.org... I cannot access any other sites.

I have run all scans with my programs, cleared web history etc...

You could back up your files and reinstall windows.
See if you can Internet Explorer or if you have to, download Opera from download.com and use that. I would remove firefox at least for now until this is resolved.

After that, I'd try and download a good uninstall program that will help get all the junk that I installed off my PC's registry. Only after that install a good free anti-virus program like AVG anti-virus or something.
Maybe try hijack this, a software which shows unwelcome programs; Then you can remove them (be careful not to remove required programs). Also try ccleaner to help clean things (again care is required)...

I Can't Install Anything Due To Virus?

Yesterday (or two days ago) I log on my computer to find some info on a certain stuff. I realize that my computer is flooded with virus! And even a couple of Trojans too (I'm not so knowledgeable about Trojans, because I have never had one before).

I have no idea what's going on, because I don't remember doing anything that made my computer this way. Most of it is fix (or the constant popups, and a couple of files), because I scan it with AVG, and uninstall programs that I never downloaded before, but I know it's still there.

Recently I decided to download Avast!, which a website recommended me to do so. I already have AVG, but I want anther virus software to keep this computer protected. In fact, I tried in numerous attempts to download other virus softwares, but fail (and I know it's the virus, because I have never had this problem with my Window XP before). There's no error message - the installation window just close down suddenly. Is there anything I can do?

your computer was probably ON when u tried to turn it on when u came back from school, and since it was on and u hit the on button, it might have put it on stand by, but yeah...dont oull the plug, holding the power on button until ur computer turns off is a much better idea, so if ur computer acts up again and wont turn off or work, just hold the power buttin until it shuts off, but this shouldnt happen often

I think your problem might be; you have just run out of HD space! You could go to your add/remove program and remove programs that you haven't used or don't need anymore. That might be sufficient to open up enough hd space. I would certainly be considering a bigger HD, if this is in fact the problem!

Avast and AVG can't detect them because they aren't viruses, they are pieces of information that websites store on your computer called ''cookies'' so they can track how many times you have visited their site etc. Some people feel that websites have no right to see how many times they swing by so software like Spybot S%26D give you the option of deleting them. I have avast, threatfire, spyware doctor installed on my internal HD a while ago, but eversince i booted from the very moment i installed those security apps, i can no longer access my laptop because it always freezes while processing startup items, it took 2 hours in rebooting in normal mode and still the laptop is frozen for some reasons. i thought i had a bunch of craps loading so i check msconfig in safe mode, but i only have yahoo messenger, skype and those security apps, now, i moved those security apps on my external HD, and wow i can now access my laptop, but it is relatively SLOW! very slow, is it really necessary to have those security apps on vista even if you're sacrificing your user satisfaction experience, and clogging your laptop's memory and eventually shorten it's life span? any recommendation? thanks.

Hello, I think my computer got infected with a malware that redirects to websites whenever I click one of the search results from Yahoo or Google. It redirects it to v3.m-feed.com, then to another site. I tried cleaning it with the latest definitions of Symantec Antivirus, Avast, Ad-aware, Spybot S%26D, I restored original browser settings, but the problem is still there. It happens only with IE7, and not with Firefox. I need IE7 for some of the programs I am using. Anyone experiencing the same problem? How did you fix it?

How do I get my 8GB everon flash drive to become readable again?

The computer can recognize that a flash has been plugged in but it fails to be read, possible cause is the folder I put in my flash some how became modified after some time. It started registering an enormous size when i scrowed the mouse pointer over the same folder (54GB) instead of some hundreds of MB or a GB then the description line had some foreign characters that I didn't understand. I suspected the folder. Tried to delete but it wouldn't, tried using avast chest but also failed then eventually everything just went and that was the end of my flash from being read, it changed its manufacturer's name from ''Generic USB device'' to ''RICHIP F203NO.02'' and the light wouldn't go on any more. I have been trying to download software to correct this problem but up until now its all in vein. If you guys can commend something very useful to my detailed problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

I think you are having a hard time because trojan's are not exactly viruses. So most anti-virus programs will not remove them, because they do not see them as viruses.

A couple of month's back I suffered a nasty trojan infection. It completely screwed my computer up. Every time I would get on the internet I would get blasted with pop-up after pop-up.

It got so bad, I thought I would have to get a new computer. So out of frustration I called Geek Squad. They wanted $200 to Look at my computer, and that didn't include fixing it. No Way!

my limewire can't connect to its server and my Bittorrent cant find any seeds.. this is a virus, i think. here's the details..

so my limewire can't connect.. maybe it's a connection problem..

so what i did is to go to my web browser(to find out if i have connection problems), and there was a connection.. then i downloaded Azureus (for a test download), and i got 60kbp/s dl rate.. how can limewire and bittorrent not work?? there's gotta be some problem, right?

now, for the bittorrent, i guessed that maybe the torrent didnt really have any seeds (even though it was working fine the day before).. i dled another torrent.. a fresh and healthy one... but its still the same.. it cant find any seeds.. its just like this:

You actually have what I feel is the best antivirus software you can get and for the last 10 yrs nearly every year it's been rated #1... you need to have Avast do a ''Boottime'' scan

NOT just a regular scan of your computer, If you dont do a ''boot time scan'' it will NOT remove your virus as this is the only way to remove a virus, what it does is boots avast and only avast so that any virus' found will be removed before the operating system boots. This will take about 45 mins so if you plan on using the internet, I'd suggest having Avast do the boottime scan before you go to bed.

I know this doesn't help much, but why uninstall Nod32? It is the best anti-virus...
Control Panel - Add %26 Remove Programs. Locate Nod32, highlight then click on delete. Make sure you have no other application open or running. If you encounter any problems in uninstalling. Visit Symantec's website. To which will then guide you to completely remove this application. Just make sure you have the other anti-virus running, so you're not open or vulnerable to viruses!

Reloading Windows XP?

At this point I don't know if it was my son or a virus accidentally reloading Windows XP. My son said that the computer wasn't working so that he turned it off and back on again and, voila, Windows XP was reloading to the original, as if I had just bought the computer. It was even saying something like, ''thank you for buying our product...'' I thought I had lost all my files but then after careful searching I found them. When the error screen comes up...Hit pause/break and read the error codes...Then repost...Else reinstall XP.
Have you tried to boot in safe mode?

Press F8 when is booting and select Safe mode. After that, try to do a system restore to restore your PC to a few days back (backup your documents)
The other answers are correct. But when you do the F8 thing another thing you can do is a ''step-by-step'' load. That way you can see what is loading and if there are any errors.

When im browsing the internet i'll get alerts in my toolbar and random internet explorer browsers will open to webpages telling me to download (insert name here) anti virus/trojan/malware/spyware software. 99.9% sure they all just want to hack me since everytime i click yes just to see and it starts to download my avast security pops up and aborts it. Is there a way to stop these things from popping up because it causes horrible lag on my computer when they try to open and it happens quite frequently. also once or twice a day an ''inappropriate'' one will pop up so I don't want someone in my family to use my laptop and have it come up. I usually run several virus scans a day now and all it ever comes up with is tracking cookies(no big deal) and every now and then a minor virus which i delete but the pop ups are still coming.

There is file autorun.inf in your root directory that commands your patition's behavior.

The content of this file is like :

Sadly, your browser has been hijacked and it is near to impossible to get rid of the darn pest unless you reformat. So back up your hard drive and insert your boot up disk. You will be given an option to reformat, which as you know will wipe clean your hard drive but that is your only option at this point. Once that's done, download a reliable anti-spyware program. BE sure to keep it up to date and also be sure that your windows update software is functioning properly.

There are no significant differences between 10 and 11. However, if you don't need WMP's library functionality, I would suggest using Media Player Classic, which is a lot leaner and will really help with the little RAM you have.

As an anti-virus solution, I think Antivir (you probably mean Avira) is better. It's also leaner than Avast. Do not install an additional firewall (it requires memory), XP already has one built-in.

If you can, upgrade to at least 512 MBs of RAM, this will really speed up your computer if you use memory-intensive stuff. Your processor is quite good.

on your old computer how much ram do you have. you need at least 512 min for xp to work right. If you have the room on your HD yeah media is a good player. I like winamp better. And i go with AVG anti spy and virus ware. Its free too and a really good program. If you doing that you might want to download zonealarm too for a good firewall protection. Good luck

Has anyone ever heard of a virus that does these things? I DLed something from a bit torrent site several days ago and these problems popped up. Restarting the computer solves them unless I go to the folder the files are stored in or open the downloader again.

A full system scan with Avast reveals nothing, and a quick system scan with Norton shows nothing either.

I have to disagree about getting Norton, everyone I know that knows what they're doing with computers hates it. I would get rid of either AVG or Avast, you really should have only 1 antivirus. If you are willing to pay for an antivirus, definitely go with kaspersky. Also, Rambooster isn't really necessary and probably slows down your computer more than it speeds it up.

You might also want to upgrade your Ad-Aware and possibly your Spybot to the latest versions.

dump avast and avg go to comodo they have an excelent antivirus there also dump ramboost if you don't know how to properly use ccleaner i'd lose that too can remove needed programs. as far as norton it's a resource hog but if you want to spend the money go ahead the programs you have listed are free and work fine
the best thing to do i would say to buy norton anti security and delete all the ones you have. that way you have it all in one and not so many programs. hope this helps you

AVG users - advice needed please!?

I am currently using the free edition of AVG. I have always used this, having tested both Avast and Avira - I definitely prefer AVG, so I don't want any recommendations that I try any of the other free programs, please!

However, I have noticed that sometimes when my e-mail client (Windows Live Mail) is receiving messages, I get a little silver pop-up box at the bottom of the screen, which shows that AVG is scanning them as they come in. Yet, other times this doesn't appear.

Can anyone confirm if AVG is still scanning the incoming messages, even without this pop-up box? I have opened the AVG Control Centre, and it says the e-mail scanner is fully-functional.

ColinC hit the nail on the head here...it to do with the size of the email message.

Just to re-iterate:

Small messages are checked so fast that you never see the popup window as the scan process is complete before the program can launch the popup window.

Larger messages take longer therefore the program has time to display the popup.

avg will scan everything incoming every site any emails you get sometimes it tells you what its doing other times it wont so i would not worry its a great program.
That little box only shows when large files are being downloaded. It still scans the smaller files, so there's nothing to worry about.

AVG Antispy is pretty good. Keep in mind that after the AVG trial period it reverts to being an on-demand scanner only and you lose its real-time protection and its auto-update feature, and quite honestly it really isn't worth *buying* ...

But in the mean time, it's a good program to get experienced with.

all of a suddent today the internet communication shield has blocked access to all these bogus sites that my computer seems to be trying to reach...it did tell me i had a trojan horse but i ran everything...in safe mode and it told me it was quarantined and then i deleted it. i ran spybot, ccleaner, avast, etc...but these stupid things keep popping up

Turn off the System Restore Point

Click Apply

Click Yes

Click OK

Restart the computer in Safe Mode

Press the F8 key a few times at the system boot up, until the selection screen appears.

Highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Run another Full Scan with Spyware Doctor

Restart the computer into regular mode

I have researched all anti-virus products and the best anti-virus protection is Kaspersky. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 is just as good if not better, it runs faster and has less software conflicts but may be more difficult to use.

The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
