When you install, it offers to set up icons on desktop, tray or start menu.

Open Avast, go to Menu%26gt;Settings...%26gt;Appearance and check ''show icon in tray'' to get the ball back.

This is useful to have...you can save memory and speed up your machine by only loading in the real-time modules you need (Internet, P2P downloads, email etc) and they are quick to switch on or off if you have the tray icon.
