The best antivirus is human brain witch decides not to run stupid traps on its PC, but when you only choose between symantec and avast, I would prefere avast,less resources , regular updates, and free.

Get McAfee....it runs better in the background and doesnt slow up the system as much
Avast is on a roll, it rocks the viruses outta PC. But, an antivirus alone is not enough..so also keep an antispyware, like xoftspy 4.0 or spybot or adaware. You can also think of AVG coz its free for personal use and is there for quite some time now. Bye...best of luck

Never heard of Avast, so that should tell you something.

The best 2 chooices are McAfee Anti Virus by Network Associates or Symantec Anti Virus by Symantec.

Both of these programs come with a 1 year subscription for virus updates. After the one year, you must pay an annual fee to continue to receive updated dat files.
Avast is better in my opinion than symantec.
I swear by Symantec Norton Anti-virus. But I do not care for the Norton Internet Security package. It seems to slow computers down too much. AVG is OK, but...
