I don't recommend Norton over Avast unless someone already has Norton, and even then it's only when they have plenty of money and a ton of extra resources in their machine.
For everyone else I recommend Avast. Avast uses less hard drive space and memory, and is free for non-commercial, personal use.
Norton is more snuggly wrapped into the OS, which makes it better in some aspects, but also means that it can do more damage to the OS in its attempts to fix it.
I had to reinstall someones entire operating system when they tried to install Norton 2007. After a fresh installation of Windows, I was able to install it without issues. Later, I found out that the software slowed the persons computer down insanely. We upgraded her RAM and the issue seems to have disappeared, but before I upgrade her machine it had been much like a snail.
I noticed Norton runs an additional process when you run MS Office. When I ran Excel I saw that the process Norton runs beside it used 3 times as much as Excel itself. That's ridiculous! Instead of taking 12MB of ram to run Excel it would take 48MB of ram to run it, because of Norton.
