Which is better protection from viruses...avg or avast?

They are both good programs. I've used them both, so at this point its a matter of personal preference.

I prefer AVG but both have many different advantages.

For me, I prefer AVG
Avast! has about 5% better virus detection (roughly 87%) compared to AVG, but has a more complicated user interface. They both perform live scans and are not too memory hungry. Either application is good, personally I use Avast! Obviously do not rely completely on Avast! or AVG to be clean of any virus - use common sense when installing applications and downloading stuff - even from your friends on AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN.
That's easy: Don't use free anti-virus programs if you value the content on your PC!! (and let's be honest here, a licensed program doesn't cost that much these days..................)

I don't know how much you know about anti-virus programs and system utility software (and I suppose you don't really need to know that much if you don't use your pc for about 8 to 10 hours a day), but I would spend a relatively small amount of money and by a commercial program (such as Kaspersky, currently the best anti-virus program, -don't use norton or macafee, as they drain the power from your computer!- , and also use System Mechanic, a top all-in-one system tool).
