In my opinion two of the worst things you can do to your computer are Norton and AOL. Avast is the best I have found, about the only thing that the pro version allows is scheduling scans, so the free version is all you really needs. Avast has never failed me and it hides quietly in the background while doing a great job!
Avast has a free version. AVG has a free version.

Both are better than Norton.

I have Avast on my Vista machine and it works very good. I like the Avast Screen Saver. It scans your PC when the screen saver is running.

AVG, Avast, Bitdefender. Same acceptable crap, no real defense against spyware, but you can combine them with Spybot if you wanna stay free.
Norton is rubbish, it has very high overheads which will slow your machine.

Avast is OK both free and paid for

AVG is best both free and paid for
Without a doubt it's Avast, Nortons lets too much get through. plus it slows down the computer. AVG is getting to be the same way, it takes forever to scan a 40 gig HD
