In the taskbar, lower left corner, there is an icon represents your avast anti-virus, right click that and choose close or stop protection, to restore double click the shortcut and resume protection.

Start, run, type msconfig, go to start up menu and uncheck your virus and spyware. Then restart computer. Recheck when you need it later.
