I think one thing that sets Avast apart from other antivirus products is its ability to perform a boot-time scan. Something that a lot of antivirus does not have.

Basically before viruses even get a chance to load up again and spreads to other files while doing a boot time scan Avast can already remove them.

Working as a tech I've used Avast on several occasions on infected PC's with positive results.

I would recommend a good combination of antivirus and firewall to defend against threats. At home I use Avast + Comodo Pro free firewall.

McAfee is a horrible piece of junk. Do not accept it even if THEY pay you.
